Global Teacher Prize

global-teacher-prize

An annual US $1 million award presented to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. The Global Teacher Prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognised and celebrated. It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers – not only on their students but on the communities around them.

Why Teachers?

An inadequate education is a major factor behind today’s global social, political, economic and health issues. We believe education has the power to reduce poverty, prejudice and conflict. Teachers around the world work tirelessly to provide an education for children so the status of teachers is critically important to our global future. Teacher status has a significant impact on recruitment, retention, job satisfaction and performance.

The Global Teacher Prize is awarded by the Varkey Foundation under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

GEMS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement is a two-way street where the school, families, and the community actively work together, creating networks of shared responsibility for student success. Students are motivated and engaged in learning — both in school and in community settings, during and after school.

A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. Community schools offer a personalised curriculum that emphasises real-world learning and community problem-solving. Schools become centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends.

We believe that by engaging with the community, our students develop a better understanding of global development issues and the impact they can have in our world. Our aspiration is that, for every child enrolled at a GEMS school, we impact the lives of 100 underprivileged children in our world.
